Psychotherapy
Understanding the experiences and patterns that shape how you think, feel, and relate to the world.
Wayfinder Psychotherapy offers individual online psychotherapy for teens and adults throughout Michigan.
Individual Psychotherapy
One-on-one counseling. Deep, lasting, evidence-based, and clinically-oriented.
When patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are holding you back from where you want your life to lead. You don’t just want to change your circumstances; you are willing to rediscover and reorient parts of yourself.
People seek therapy for many reasons. Sometimes there is a specific concern, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or grief. Other times, the difficulty is less defined: a recurring sense of dissatisfaction, relationship patterns that don't seem to change, or the feeling that something isn't right despite outwardly functioning well.
Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to examine those experiences more closely. Rather than focusing only on immediate symptoms, the work can explore the relationships, beliefs, experiences, and patterns that contribute to them.
An Integrative, Depth-Oriented Approach
I recognize that mental health terminology (chiefly innumerable approaches and acronyms) can be difficult for those seeking help to navigate. Here I endeavor to provide explanations and expectations for potential clients.
I believe healing and growth do not come from simply from understanding symptoms or following a manualized treatment, though these can provide benefits. Rather, I believe our difficulties develop and their solutions are discovered within the context of our experiences, relationships, beliefs, choices, and the meaning we make of our lives.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic therapy examines how past experiences, important relationships, and patterns outside our immediate awareness can influence present feelings, decisions, and behavior. Greater understanding can make it possible to recognize familiar patterns and respond to situations differently. We begin with the goal of becoming a better, more adaptive and integrated, version of yourself.
Existential Psychotherapy
Existential therapy explores questions of freedom, responsibility, choice, connection, and meaning. It can be especially useful when familiar ways of living no longer feel satisfying, when you are questioning expectations, or when you are trying to determine what matters to you. Though it is associated with a particular philosophy, clients are not in any way expected to believe or adhere to existentialism. The influence arises in that clients do exist and thus deal with problems every human being faces. My task is not to teach you the philosophy side of psychology but to learn how your personal philosophy influences your personal psychology.
REWIND Therapy
REWIND is a focused approach to trauma therapy that can help people work through distressing memories without having to describe the details of what happened. The goal is to stop involuntary recall, reduce avoidance of triggers, and restore some cognitive and emotional functioning.
Complimentary REWIND Therapy for U.S. Veterans in Michigan
REWIND can be particularly helpful for veterans dealing with the effects of traumatic experiences. I offer REWIND therapy at no cost to U.S. veterans living in Michigan. Because this is a focused, individualized approach, the length of treatment varies from person to person. It typically takes four to six sessions, although some people may need more. There is no charge for the REWIND treatment process, regardless of how long it takes to complete.
Once the REWIND work is complete, you may choose to continue with ongoing psychotherapy at my regular fee. Continuing therapy is entirely optional.
Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT)
IPSRT focuses on the relationship between daily routines, relationships, energy, and mood. It is specially designed for the treatment of bipolar disorders, though it has utility in treating those with unipolar depression as well. Please note that an important process within IPSRT is tracking daily behaviors (i.e., sleeping, eating, social contact, and working) and regulating when they should occur in your day. Once routines are stabilized, we would discuss how to accommodate variations as the need arises.
My Broader Perspective to Both Therapy and Coaching
The Wayfinder’s Journey
At the intersection of Jungian psychology and literary and cultural studies lies what is known as The Hero’s Journey. It is predominately used as a framework for writing and interpreting works of fiction, but it has been shown in psychology research to help participants interpret their lives as meaningful.
I have merged aspects of this framework into the abovementioned approaches to create The Wayfinder’s Journey — an integrative framework that helps you understand your challenges and the complex psychological principles undergirding them as part of a larger, lifelong story of growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Psychotherapy is a clinical service for people seeking help with emotional difficulties, mental health concerns, distressing experiences, or patterns affecting their well-being and relationships.
If you're primarily looking for support with personal development, decisions, or life direction rather than mental health treatment, life coaching may be a more appropriate option.
Is Psychotherapy the right service for me?
1
Not necessarily. Not everyone that can benefit from psychotherapy qualifies for a formal diagnosis (as designated by a code in the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic Manual).
If a diagnosis is applicable, I will discuss that conclusion and my rationale with you. Please know that I view diagnoses as a helpful shorthand for a group of symptoms, not as a label that defines your identity. Their value is to remind us what we are working to resolve.
Will I receive a diagnosis?
2
I really can’t say until I get have a sense of your goals and our starting point.
In general, there are short-term therapy models that aim to solve distinct emotional, relational, or behavioral problems and there are long-term models that emphasize patterns, values, and identities which take longer to understand. My hope is that clients are interested in the latter as it leads to more powerful, lasting change. Two years is a good estimate for such a process.
Of course, clients are agreeing to a service and thus dictate the course of treatment. While I do offer recommendations, clients may set timelines, change goals, or end treatment at any time.
What is the typical treatment timeline?
